Since before the App Store existed

The Story of Wyvern

Wyvern opened its gates in the late 1990s — a hand-drawn multiplayer world you could wander with strangers, back when that was still a small miracle. More than a quarter-century later it is still here, still growing, and shipping improvements nearly every day.

The world was never generated. Every town, dungeon, and coastline was placed tile by tile by wizards — player-builders who earned the right to shape the world. Whole regions exist because someone taught themselves to code to build them: one of Wyvern's wizards learned Python at fifteen to make the Asgard area, and works at JPL today. Many of those names are still on the maps they built, decades later.

1997

Wyvern's first code — years before the App Store, years before WoW. A Java client, dial-up friendly, and a world small enough to know every shopkeeper.

~1999

The gates open to the public — five years before World of Warcraft launched.

2000s

The wizard program takes off — player-built areas grow the world by hundreds of maps. Guilds, races, and the great cities take shape; the game finds a home in middle-school computer labs.

~2012

The quiet years — the world sleeps through a long downtime and a ground-up engine rewrite.

2016

Wyvern returns on iOS and Android — the old world in your pocket, with thousands of adventurers rediscovering it.

2021

The Steam release brings the PC client to a new generation — and Wyvern wins the Game Development World Championship's Fan Favorite Hobby Game award.

2026

The browser era: play instantly at play.ghosttrack.com — no download, no install. The game now ships new features nearly every day, with patch notes written for players, not changelogs.

Why It Matters

Games this old usually survive as museum pieces. Wyvern survives as a living world: the same map you walked decades ago is still there, but now the creatures wade into the water, speech floats over the map, and the Hall of Records is public. Twenty-five-plus years of history is the one feature no new game can ship.
